For low Power: Integrated SMPS are more favorable than external Plug-in Power Supplies or Linear Regulators

Advantages
  • No additional bulky housing for a possibly heavy power supply; reduced expenditure for housings, printed circuit board and handling compensates possibly additional expenditure for electronics.
  • Reduced energy costs by better efficiency: Even with only 5 W output power one can save energy costs of approx. 18, - € by an improvement of the efficiency of 50% to 70% (with continuous operation over 5 years).
  • The costs of safety investigations are often overestimated; beyond that the use of a ce-conformal power supply does not guarantee the fulfilment of the EMC laws. Critically: Connection between power supply and load, which can work as a transmitting antenna for interfering radiation.
  • The economical use of a replacement of plug-in power supplies by integrated SMPS would be substantial: With (estimated) 200 million plug-in power supplies (approx. 5/household) with on the average 5 W losses an energy cost saving of approx. 750 millions € per annum only in Germany could to be obtained by reduction of the losses by around 3 W (corresponds to an improvement of the efficiency of 50% to 71,5%).
